June Amazon Comparison of ECPA Publishers

Unfortunate news this month. The information service (www.TitleZ.com) that I use to generate my Amazon comparison of ECPA publishers has changed the way they report their Amazon rankings. At the beginning of June, they started simultaneously including both Kindle and print versions of books when I conducted a specific publisher search.

The problem is that now you can't tell which book is a Kindle version and which is print without doing a very time-consuming manual search. TitleZ has given no explanation for why they suddenly started reporting their Amazon ranking this way.

Because of this problem, I'm unable to generate my monthly research based only on print versions of books. If TitleZ goes back to the former way of reporting, I'll gladly provide my free research again and post the results on this blog.

Sorry for the inconvenience. I appreciate everyone's support of this monthly research that I've provided to the industry for the last 18 months.

Revised Data: Amazon Comparison of ECPA Publishers - September

For those who follow my monthly "Amazon Comparison of ECPA Publishers," some new information was provided that influenced the September rankings. Two publishers notified me about separate imprints within their company that weren't being included in their rankings. I use http://www.titlez.com/ as the source for my free research, and their online database doesn't automatically include these imprints.

Manually adding the Amazon rankings for these imprints made an impact on the rankings. For example, Moody Publishers moved up from # 9 to # 6 in the rankings due to the strength of their "Northfield" division. In addition, B&H Publishing moved up one spot to # 9 in my rankings on the sales of their new military-based imprint, "Fidelis."

The January Amazon rankings for the Top 15 CBA Publishers is now available. This research lets you see both the overall CBA industry rankings, plus each publisher's individual top 20 bestselling book list.

3. Zondervan e-Books Continue Strong Sales:
Their e-book version of the NIV Bible captured the #278 ranking in Amazon's Kindle store.
Also, "Jesus Wants to Save Christians" by Rob Bell continues a high sales trend in Amazon's Kindle store with a ranking of #420. This ranking rivals sales of the book's print version.

WildFire Marketing has released the latest Amazon rankings for the Top 15 CBA Publishers. This month, the research was expanded to let viewers see both the overall CBA industry rankings, plus each publisher's individual top 20 bestselling book list.

Why is this information helpful to you? This is one of the few ways that authors, agents, and publishers can simultaneously see how a publisher's best books stack up against their peers. For example, Neilsen BookScan doesn't let other publishers see the competition's sales numbers (only bestseller lists). But, my free research gives publishers a way to see which titles are selling well on Amazon at 15 other houses. This data is also helpful to see which authors, topics, and genres are dominating Amazon sales trends.

Note: Amazon rankings do not reflect accurate sales figures and only account for a small percentage of a book's total sales. However, they can help determine how specific publishers or book titles perform over time versue their peers.
